This was sent to me in email. I have seen credit given to a Dallas paper for it, but I’m not sure of the origin.

I just wanted to share with you all that out of a horrible tragedy we were blessed by so many people. Chris was Derek’s teammate through 10 years of training and battle. They both suffer/suffered from PTSD to some extent and took great care of each other because of it. 2006 in Ramadi was horrible for young men that never had any more aggressive physical contact with another human than on a Texas football field. They lost many friends. Chris became the armed services number #1 sniper of all time. Not something he was happy about, other than the fact that in so doing, he saved a lot of American lives. Three years ago, his wife Taya asked him to leave the SEAL teams as he had a huge bounty on his head by Al Qaeda. He did and wrote the book The American Sniper. 100% of the proceeds from the book went to two of the SEAL families who had lost their sons in Iraq . That was the guy Chris was. He formed a company in Dallas to train military, police and I think firemen as far as protecting themselves in difficult situations. He also formed a foundation to work with military people suffering from PTSD. Chris was a giver not a taker. He along with a friend and neighbor, Chad Littlefield, were murdered trying to help a young man that had served 6 months in Iraq and claiming to have PTSD.

Now I need to tell you about all of the blessings. Southwest Airlines flew in any SEAL and their family from any airport they flew into free of charge. The employees donated buddy passes and one lady worked for 4 days without much of a break to see that it happened. Volunteers were at both airports in Dallas to drive them to the hotel. The Marriott Hotel reduced their rates to $45 a night and cleared the hotel for only SEALs and family. The Midlothian, Tx. Police Department paid the $45 a night for each room. I would guess there were about 200 people staying at the hotel. 100 of them SEALs. Two large buses were chartered (unknown donor paid the bill) to transport people to the different events and they also had a few rent cars (donated). The police and secret service were on duty 24 hours during the stay at our hotel.

At the house the Texas DPS parked a large motor home in front to block the view from reporters. It remained there the entire 5 days for the SEALs to congregate in and all to use the restroom so as not to have to go in the house. Taya, their two small children and both sets of parents were staying in the home. Only a hand full of SEALs went into the home as they had different duties and meetings were held sometimes on a hourly basis. It was a huge coordination of many different events and security. Derek was assigned to be a pall bearer, to escort Chris’ body when it was transferred from Midlothian Funeral Home to Arlington Funeral Home and to be with Taya. Tough job. Taya seldom came out of her bedroom. The home was full with people from the church and other family members that would come each day to help. I spent one morning in a bedroom with Chris’ mom and the next morning with Chad Littlefield’s parents (the other man murdered with Chris). Tough job.

Nolan Ryan sent his cooking team, a huge grill and lots of steaks, chicken and hamburgers. They set up in the front yard and fed people all day long. The 200 SEALs and their family. The next day a local BBQ restaurant set up a buffet in front of the house and fed all once again. Food was plentiful and all were taken care of. The family’s church kept those inside the house well fed.

Jerry Jones, the man everyone loves to hate, was a rock star. He donated use of Cowboy Stadium for the services as it was determined that so many wanted to attend. The charter buses transported us to the stadium on Monday at 10:30. Every car, bus, motorcycle was searched with bomb dogs and police. I am not sure if kooks were making threats trying to make a name for themselves or if so many SEALs in one place was a security risk…I don’t know. We willing obliged. No purses ino the stadium! We were taken to The Legends room high up and a large buffet was available. That was about 300 people. We were growing.

A Medal of Honor recipient was there, lots of secret service and police and Sarah Palin and her husband. She looked nice, this was a very formal military service. The service started at 1:00 and when we were escorted onto the field I was shocked. We heard that about 10,000 people had come to attend also. They were seated in the stadium seats behind us. It was a beautiful and emotional service. Bagpipe and drum corps were wonderful and the A&M men’s choir stood through the entire service and sang right at the end. We were all in tears.

The next day was the 200 mile procession from Midlothian, Tx. to Austin for burial. It was a cold, drizzly, windy day, but the people were out. We had dozens of police motorcycles riders, freedom riders 5 chartered buses and lots of cars. You had to have a pass to be in the procession and still it was huge. Two helicopters circled the procession with snipers sitting out the side door for protection. It was the longest funeral procession ever in the state of Texas . People were everywhere. The entire route was shut down ahead of us, the people were lined up on the side of the road the entire way. Firemen down on one knee, police officers holding their hats over their hearts, children waving flags, veterans saluting as we went by.. Every bridge had fire trucks with large flags displayed from their tall ladders….people all along the entire 200 miles standing in the cold weather. It was so heartwarming. Taya rode in the hearse with Chris’ body so Derek rode the route with us. I was so grateful to have that time with him.

The services were at Texas National Cemetery. Very few are buried there and you have to apply to get in. It is like people from Civil War, Medal of Honor winners a few from the Alamo and all the historical people of Texas . It was a nice service and the Freedom Riders surrounded the outside of the entire cemetery to keep the crazy church people from Kansas that protests at military funerals away from us. Each SEAL put his Trident ( metal SEAL badge) on the top of Chris’ casket one at a time. A lot hit it in with one blow, Derek was the only one to take 4 taps to put his in and it was almost like he was caressing it as he did it. Another tearful moment.

After the service the governor’s wife, Anita Perry, invited us to the governor’s mansion. She stood at the door and greeted each of us individually and gave each of the SEALs a coin of Texas (she was a sincere, compassionate, and gracious hostess). We were able to tour the ground floor and then went into the garden for beverages and BBQ. So many of the team guys said that after they get out they are moving to Texas . They remarked that they had never felt so much love and hospitality. The charter buses then took the guys to the airport to catch their returning flights. Derek just now called and after a 20 hours flight he is back in his spot, in a dangerous land on the other side of the world, protecting America .

We just wanted to share with the events of a quite an emotional, but blessed week.

Sad news, as Margaret Thatcher has passed away. She was one of the world’s great politicians, bring Great Britain back onto the forefront of the world’s countries. She dragged Great Britain back to the right, and consequently back to prosperity. And she did it being positive.

She came along at the same time as another great politician, also positive, and also very effective at bringing his country back to the forefront of the world community.

Don’t forget Pope John Paul II in this, either. He was at the forefront of a lot of positive changes, too.

The world isn’t better, with these people gone.

Honor. It’s what this book is all about. From the opening of the yacht to reveal the murdered victims to the results of the election at the end, it’s all about honor.

The pirates have no honor. They work for money, not a cause.

The Coast Guard has honor. While they might bend the rules a bit (ok, a lot), they do it for a greater good.

The President has honor. Maybe not in actions, but in intentions, and in the sacrifices in his political career.

Of course the soldiers have honor. This is laid bare throughout the book. Even involved in the most violent parts of the book, they are acting according to orders, and the orders are not such that they would be forced to question them. It’s degrees of action, and that battle is fought above their pay grade.

The FBI has honor. Even when they uncover possible treason, they view the circumstances, and don’t let a good life go to waste. I hope it works this way all the time.

The antagonist has no honor. He works for himself. Not necessarily because he is a mercenary, but because he lives to better only himself. Nice touch for his comeuppance at the end, too.

The protagonist has honor, of course. He sacrifices his life, to fight for what he believes. He doesn’t lose it, but it’s the act that is courageous, and honorable. Tell the truth, and live within the law. For the most part, he does this, only skirting the law to steer the situation right. Yeah, I’m a fan, but this book is the tops of all things Clancy.

Not this one:

You made this year a special one in the history of ISU athletics. Yours was a class of castoffs and transfers, and you managed to come together and make a run in the NCAA tournament, when most figured you would spend the postseason viewing it from home. Shows how much they know.

You had the heart, the will, and the ability to win a lot of games, and managed to win a couple more that they handed you an L in. My thanks to you, for making this season enjoyable.

The future is bright for ISU Basketball, and you helped to start that out.

You also took the time to take some pictures with a young Cyclone fan after the game against Ohio State in Dayton, and you made his day (my nephew).

U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D) of Iowa wants to increase the minimum wage, and that would include the first increase for tipped workers in more than 20-years.

As a waitress, Betty Waters of Des Moines is trying to raise her four sons on just $4.35 an hour plus tips. "Trying to buy food is hard." says Waters, "I mean, hamburger, macaroni and cheese, hamburger and hotdogs just to make sure that your kids have any kind of food in their stomachs is the best that we can do."

Latest brainstorm by Outgoing Senator Tom Harkin (still love the sound of that). Betty the waitress will get a raise!

But did anyone interview her boss? Would Betty still have a job? What does Betty make in tips per hour (I'll bet it's more than $4.65 an hour, or she's a shitty waitress)? What benefits does Betty get, and why? If $10 is fair, why not $20 an hour, $50 an hour, etc?

Just asking questions here.

From an email. Links about the story follow.

In honor of all our Veterans I thought this little bit of history was interesting to share.

Meet America’s first war dog, a stray Pit Bull/Terrier mix, named Stubby. He became Sgt. Stubby, was the most decorated war dog of World War I and the only dog to be promoted to sergeant through combat.
One day he appeared at Yale Field in New Haven, Connecticut; while a group of soldiers were training, stopping to make friends with soldiers as they drilled. One soldier, Corporal Robert Conroy, developed a fondness for the dog. He named him Stubby because of his short legs. When it became time for the outfit to ship out, Conroy hid Stubby on board the troop ship. In order to keep the dog, the private taught him to salute his commanding officers warming their hearts to him.

Stubby served with the 102nd Infantry, 26th Division in the trenches in France for 18 months and participated in four offensives and 18 battles. The loud noise of the bombs and gun fire did not bother him. He was never content to stay in the trenches but went out and found wounded soldiers.

Stubby entered combat on February 5, 1918 at Chemin Des Dames, north of Soissons, and was under constant fire, day and night for over a month. In April 1918, during a raid to take Schieprey, Stubby was wounded in the foreleg by the retreating Germans throwing hand grenades. He was sent to the rear for convalescence, and as he had done on the front was able to improve morale. When he recovered from his wounds, Stubby returned to the trenches.

After being gassed and nearly dying himself, Stubby learned to warn his unit of poison gas attacks, continued to locate wounded soldiers in no man’s land, and since he could hear the whine of incoming artillery shells before humans could, became very adept at letting his unit know when to duck for cover.

He was solely responsible for capturing a German spy in the Argonne. The spy made the mistake of speaking German to him when they were alone. Stubby knew he was no ally and attacked him biting and holding on to him by the seat of his pants until his comrades could secure him.

Following the retaking of Chateau-Thierry by the US, the thankful women of the town made Stubby a chamois coat on which were pinned his many medals. There is also a legend that while in Paris with Corporal Conroy, Stubby saved a young girl from being hit by a car. At the end of the war, Conroy smuggled Stubby home.

After returning home, Stubby became a celebrity and marched in, and normally led, many parades across the country. He met Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and Warren G. Harding. Starting in 1921, he attended Georgetown University Law Center with Conroy, and became the Georgetown Hoyas’ team mascot. He would be given the football at halftime and would nudge the ball around the field to the amusement of the fans.

Stubby was made a life member of the American Legion, the Red Cross, and the YMCA. In 1921, the Humane Education Society awarded him a special gold medal for service to his country. It was presented by General John Pershing.

In 1926, Stubby died in Conroy’s arms. His remains are featured in The Price of Freedom: Americans at War exhibit at the Smithsonian. Stubby was honored with a brick in the Walk of Honor at the United States World War I monument, Liberty Memorial, in Kansas City at a ceremony held on Armistice Day, November 11, 2006.

“First, the cops advised me that it would cause traffic accidents as they almost wrecked when they drove by.

Second, a 55 year old lady grabbed the 75 pound ladder almost killed herself putting it against my house and didn’t realize he was fake until she climbed to the top (she was not happy). By the way, she was one of many people who attempted to do that. My yard couldn’t take it either. I have more than a few tire tracks where people literally drove up my yard.”

Just think about that for a moment. Mitt Romney received 3 million fewer votes than John McCain did in 2008. I cannot fathom this.

For everything that was on the line this election, there were GOP voters who did not vote. They did not vote for Barack Obama, who received 10 million less votes in 2012 than he did in 2008. There are not 3 million people in the military who had their absentee ballots lost. There are not 3 million ballots lost in downtown Philadelphia and other cities (I think).

Where were you? What motivation did you need to show up? What could have possibly forced you to vote?

You are the reason Romney lost. Whether it was the economy, the “War on Women”, the binders of women, the banning of contraception, whatever.

I just hope it’s not religious bigotry. Because then we would be on a WHOLE different level of WTF.

EDIT:

Seems that the explanation might be simpler than I thought. Between now and Thanksgiving, the votes will continue to be counted: Hot Air: Looking at the National Exit Poll

They’re out there, they just haven’t been counted yet, says John Podhoretz:

As I write, Mitt Romney has 57.4 million votes. John McCain ended up with 59.9 million. It’s a little noticed fact that in two weeks following every presidential election, votes continue to be reported…by the millions. As I recall, Barack Obama got something like four million more votes in the weeks after election day, while John McCain got two or three million. It’s likely that by Thanksgiving, the final vote tally will show Romney very close to or even slightly exceeding McCain’s total.

Update: Google Docs spreadsheet of current vote totals
